What to expect from photo-to-painting AI

  • Styles change more than colour. Oil styles can alter hair colour, facial features and the background, so the result is an interpretation, not a filter.
  • Lighter styles such as watercolor and pencil kept the face closest to the original in our test.
  • Objects can be added or changed — in our still-life test a wooden bowl became a basket. Check the result before using it as a reference.
  • This page shows one portrait and one still life. Other photos can give different results.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn a photo into a painting for free?
Yes. On the web you can create one image free per browser, with no account or credit card. The AI Gahaku app is free to download and has an optional PRO plan.
Which painting styles can I use?
The web trial offers 12 styles: eight famous painters (Van Gogh, Monet, Bouguereau, Warhol, Sorolla, Mucha, Zorn and Matisse) plus two watercolors, pencil and anime. The app has 300+ styles.
Will the painting still look like me?
It depends on the style. In our test, watercolor and pencil stayed closest to the original face, while the Van Gogh style changed hair colour and facial features.
Is my photo stored?
Your photo is sent to AI Gahaku and its AI providers for processing and is not saved in the web trial’s database. The result is kept for one hour so you can reopen it, and you can delete it sooner. See the Privacy Policy for details.
How long does it take?
In our test the engine took about 3 to 12 seconds per image, but uploading, the bot check and busy periods can make the whole process take a few minutes.
